There are ventilation holes along the back and it is mounted 1cm from the wall/plate so that the bottom of the computer can get rid of the heat.
It is designed for 18 mm Macbook Pro's, which includes the 2013-2015 models.
2016 and newer models will fit with 1-2mm extra space.
